What does a water heater expansion tank cost, and do I need one?
The small tank on the cold line that shows up on water heater quotes. Here is what it does, what it costs installed, and when code requires it.

licensed or specialized work
Usually added by the plumber during a water heater replacement, where it costs little extra. On its own it is a short licensed visit. You need one when the house has a backflow preventer or a pressure-reducing valve on the main, which makes the plumbing a closed system; heated water has nowhere to expand and the pressure relief valve starts dripping. Many jurisdictions require it on every new water heater install.

Why it costs what it costs
- Part and labor: the tank is $40 to $100; mounting, a tee fitting and setting the air charge to match house pressure make up the rest.
- Bundled or separate: on a replacement quote it should add $100 to $200. As a standalone call it carries the full trip charge.
- Support: a tank mounted on flexible piping needs a bracket, which adds a few minutes and a few dollars.
When to stop and call someone
- The relief valve on the water heater drips after showers or overnight: that is thermal expansion, and the fix is this tank, not a new valve.
- A new water heater quote without an expansion tank where the house has a pressure regulator: ask why.
- Water hammer or a pressure gauge reading above 80 psi, which also calls for a look at the pressure-reducing valve.
Questions people ask
- Is the expansion tank on my water heater quote padding?
- No, if the house has a pressure-reducing valve or a backflow device, and in many places it is required by code on any new install. $100 to $200 as part of a replacement is normal.
- How long does an expansion tank last?
- Five to ten years. Tap it: a hollow top and a solid bottom means it is working; solid all the way through means the bladder has failed and it needs replacing.
- Can I install one myself?
- A handy homeowner can on a soldered or push-fit line, but it must be pressurised to the house's water pressure with a gauge. Most people have it done with the water heater.
