What should hydrojetting and descaling a kitchen drain cost?
When snaking stops working, plumbers recommend hydrojetting: high-pressure water that scours grease and scale off the pipe wall. Here is the range and when it is the right call.

Hydrojetting is a plumber's job: the machine runs at 1,500 to 4,000 psi and will damage a weak pipe. It is the right answer when the same drain has been snaked twice and keeps backing up, which means the blockage is a lining of grease or scale, not a single clog. Before the jetting, ask for a camera look at the line. If the pipe is cast iron with scaling, descaling is the same visit; if the camera finds a break or a belly, no amount of jetting fixes it.

Why it costs what it costs
- Access: a clean-out near the kitchen is a quick job; no clean-out means pulling the trap or going through the roof vent.
- Length and material: a short PVC kitchen branch is the low end; a long cast iron main with heavy scale is the high end and may need a chain descaler as well as water.
- The camera: $150 to $350 on its own, often folded into the jetting price. Insist on seeing the footage.
When to stop and call someone
- Two different plumbers have snaked the same drain this year. Snaking again is money down the same pipe.
- Several drains slow at once, or a toilet gurgles when the tub drains: that is the main line, not the kitchen branch.
- Water backing up into the lowest fixture in the house, which is a main line blockage and a same-day call.
Questions people ask
- My kitchen sink keeps backing up and a plumber says it needs hydrojetting and descaling. What should that cost?
- $350 to $900 for a kitchen or branch line, including the camera inspection. A full main line with heavy cast iron scale can run higher. If a quote is above $1,200, ask what the camera showed and get a second opinion.
- Do I need a licensed plumber to hydrojet, or can I do it myself?
- A plumber. Rental jetters exist but they are low pressure, and the real value is the camera and the judgment about whether the pipe can take it.
- Will it damage old pipes?
- A sound cast iron or PVC line handles it. A pipe that is already cracked or badly corroded can fail, which is why the camera goes first and a careful plumber reduces the pressure on old iron.
- How long does hydrojetting last?
- Years on a kitchen line if grease stops going down it. Scale in cast iron grows back slowly; a descaled line is usually good for five to ten years before the question of replacement comes up.
