Replacing a toilet is a two-hour job that many homeowners do: shut the water, drain, unbolt, new wax ring, set the new bowl, reconnect. A plumber charges $150 to $350 in labor on top of the fixture. Hire it out when the floor flange is damaged or corroded, when the old toilet is bolted into a soft floor, or when the shut-off valve under the tank is stuck, which it often is after 20 years.

Why it costs what it costs

  • The toilet: a basic two-piece is $150 to $300, a comfort-height elongated one-piece $400 to $800, and the labor is the same either way.
  • The flange: a cracked or rusted flange adds a repair ring or a new flange, $50 to $250, and it is only found once the old toilet is off.
  • The shut-off valve: a seized angle stop gets replaced while the water is off, another $75 to $150.

When to stop and call someone

  • Any softness in the floor around the base, which means a leak has been running under it.
  • The flange sits below the finished floor (common after new tile), which needs a spacer or a new flange set correctly.
  • You want a wall-hung or a bidet toilet with a new outlet nearby: that is a plumber and an electrician.

Questions people ask

What is a fair price for toilet replacement?
$200 to $600 for labor and a mid-range toilet installed, if nothing is wrong underneath. Add $100 to $250 if the flange or shut-off valve needs replacing.
Can I do it myself?
Yes, with a helper for lifting and a new wax ring or a waxless seal. The one step people get wrong is overtightening the bolts and cracking the base; snug is enough.
Should I replace a toilet that just rocks a little?
Rocking is usually the bolts or a worn wax ring, not the toilet. Reseating it with a new ring is $20 in parts and the same work as a replacement without buying a toilet.

What would it cost at your house?
