A garage door company, not a handyman: the torsion springs store enough energy to break an arm, and the door is the heaviest moving object in the house. Replace when the panels are rusted, cracked or dented across several sections, or when a door from the 1990s is costing a spring every few years. If the door is sound and only the opener, a spring or a cable has failed, repair it: those jobs are $150 to $500.

Why it costs what it costs
- The door: a single non-insulated steel door is $500 to $900; a double insulated door with windows $1,500 to $3,000; wood or carriage-style custom doors run higher.
- Hardware: new tracks, rollers and springs come with the door and are worth having; reusing old springs on a new door saves little and shortens its life.
- The opener: reconnecting the existing one is included. A new belt-drive opener with a battery backup adds $400 to $700 installed.
When to stop and call someone
- A broken torsion spring (a loud bang, then the opener cannot lift the door). Do not try to lift or repair it yourself.
- The door is off its track or the cables have unwound.
- Panels bowing or a door that no longer seals at the floor, which is replacement territory.
Questions people ask
- What does it cost to replace a garage door?
- $800 to $3,500 installed for a standard steel sectional door with new tracks and springs: singles land in the lower half, doubles around $2,000, and insulation, windows and a new opener push a double toward the top.
- Can the installer reuse my opener?
- Yes, if it is under about 15 years old and lifts the new door's weight. An insulated double door is heavier than the old single, which is when the opener gets replaced too.
- The garage door remote stopped working. Do I need a new door?
- No. A remote is $30 to $60 and a five minute pairing; a new keypad or a logic board on the opener is a small repair call.
